English as a Second Language

Welcome! Bienvenidos! Byenveni! The Kennedy-Longfellow School prides itself in being a culturally and linguistically diverse learning community. Our English Language Acquisition program provides support to students who are learning English as their second language. The goal is to further develop students' skills in listening, speaking, reading, and writing through academic content. The ELL (English Language Learner) teachers provide language support in the general education classrooms as well as in small-group settings in order to meet students' individual learning needs. Through the Kennedy-Longfellow's partnership with Lesley University, ELLs further their language development through creative and meaningful projects and activities using the iPad and other technology.

"In 2011, my son went to the Kennedy-Longfellow School without knowing any word in English. As we were planning to spend a year in the US, my wife and I hoped he would acquire basic language skills during that time. However, what exactly happened overcame all our expectations. In 2 weeks, he explained to us the difference between “excuse me” and “sorry”, and started correcting my mistakes in 6 months. As the school year is coming to an end, my son is almost fluent in English and can freely engage in all kind of discussions. My wife and I are highly impressed by the progress he has made within the English language learner program, and are grateful to his ELL instructor and for enthusiastic efforts to make this progress happen".
