Second Grade

family.jpgSecond grade is an exciting year for students, as they continue to develop the skills and strategies to become confident life-learners. Across all content areas, students are deepening their critical thinking skills. Students are also increasing their stamina, especially in reading and writing. Throughout the school year, students are also learning life skills in order to be members of the community within the classroom, school, and neighborhood.

Science
The science units in second grade include Animal Life Cycles, Liquids, and Soils. Descriptions of each unit are provided below:

Animal Life Cycles
Students observe and record the growth and metamorphosis of painted lady caterpillars. By observing other animals, such as mealworms (beetle larva) and guppies, students continue to develop the concept of life cycle in animals.

Liquids
Students identify physical properties common to all liquids, examine how some properties differ among liquids, and develop an understanding of the ways liquids interact with other liquids and solids.

Soils
Students investigate local soil to discover its different components: sand, humus, and clay. They test these soil components for characteristic properties as a scientist would and use the results to explore and predict the relationship between soil composition and root growth and plant development.

Math
In Grade 2, instructional time should focus on four critical areas:

  • extending understanding of base-ten notation;
  • building fluency with addition and subtraction;
  • using standard units of measure; and
  • describing and analyzing shapes.

Literacy
In Grade 2, literacy instructional time should focus on three critical areas:

Reading Workshop: Students read a variety of self-selected and teacher-selected texts during Guided Reading and Independent Literacy Work. Students begin to read texts for longer periods of time and read in a sustained and quiet way. Students learn effective comprehension strategies that they apply to fiction and nonfiction text.

Writing Workshop: Following the Cambridge Public Schools Writing Curriculum, which is based on Lucy Calkins’ Units of Study, students write in a variety of genres. Each unit addresses particular standards that are directly related to the content, skills, and application of the unit.

Language and Word Study: Students explore the sounds, rhythms, and details of language and words through interactive read aloud, interactive writing, shared/modeled reading, shared/modeled writing, handwriting, language/word play and letter/word study. They explore the different ways we use language, build phonological awareness and vocabulary skills, and learn the conventions of print, including letters, sounds, and words.
