Enterovirus 68 (EV 68) has been in the news, so I wanted to update you with information from the Department of Public Health.

Most children just have cold-like symptoms from EV 68. The children who get hit hardest by virus are those that ALSO have asthma. If your child has asthma, make sure you have an asthma plan in place for them! Your child’s doctor can help you with create this. Any child with a cold, who wheezes or has trouble breathing, should be seen right away by a doctor.

Prevention is the key to avoid problems from this and other viruses:
Flu season is coming so make sure you and your families are immunized. Everyone 6 months of age or older should get a flu vaccine. View the Flu Clinic Schedule >>

Model good prevention for you family:
Cough or sneeze into your arm or elbow. If you use a tissue, dispose of it and then wash your hands. Avoid touching your eyes, nose, or mouth as viruses and bacteria spread this way.
Do not share drinks or other items that touch the mouth. Wash your hands often. Soap and water is the best method for good hand hygiene but hand sanitizers can also be used.

If you keep your child home make sure they stay home for 24 hours after the resolution of the predominant symptoms. Let me know if you have any questions or concerns. I can be reached at 617.349.6036 or by email.
