library picsMany people think that all we do in the library is check books in and out, but there is a lot more that goes on here! Here are some highlights:

Field Trip to the CPL
The fourth grade took a field trip to the Cambridge Public Library in January to see author/comic artist George O'Connor. O'Connor is the author of the Olympians series of books about the Greek Gods. In art class, fourth graders were doing a project on the Greek Gods, so it was a perfect collaboration.

Media Literacy
We have begun our annual Media Literacy unit with the fifth grade. We are all bombarded with media messages every day, and kids are especially vulnerable to these messages. When I surveyed the kids, most of them said they thought they were exposed to between 50 and 200 messages each day, when in reality, the number is in the thousands, starting with the logos we wear on our shoes and clothes. Our goal is to think critically about the way advertisers target people, and to recognize techniques they use. We will finish by making our own advertisements!

Books and Resources
We have new books in the library every month! We also have lots of amazing online resources. One of the best ways to see them is to go here. You will see a list of all our online resources, and a link to the library catalog. If you have children in the 3rd, 4th, or 5th grade, ask them to log into their accounts to see if they have books checked out. They can show you how to navigate to Destiny Discover to see what books are available, or to read an ebook or listen to an audiobook.

Book Fair
We are planning another book fair this year in the window of April 30-May 2. Stay tuned! We will need parent volunteers!
