On
December 20th, the KLO community held its first Bilingual Resource Day.
Families were given the opportunity to learn about an abundance of
language learning resources available through the school and city. The
program, organized and presented by Bonnie Steyer, focused on the
benefits of bilingualism and ways to promote literacy development at
home. Members of the Community Engagement Team from the Department of
Human Services as well as staff from the Pathways to Family Success
Program attended and supported the successful event through their
outreach, insight, and resources. The event also featured a wealth of
literature and online resources from the Cambridge Public Library.
In
addition, families were able to check out books for the first time from
the new Kennedy-Longfellow Bilingual Children’s Library. Through the
generosity and support of the Cambridge Rotary Club, Ms. Steyer recently
purchased over 120 children’s books in over 20 languages. Children at
the Kennedy-Longfellow can now check out books in their home language
and read with their families.
The Bilingual Resource Day truly honored and celebrated the rich linguistic diversity present at the Kennedy-Longfellow School!
