Grade 5 KeyPals Has Started!

Grade 5 KeyPals Has Started!
Posted on 01/19/2018
The fifth grade has launched this year’s KeyPal Program. KeyPals is a longstanding business/university partnership here at KLO between IBM, Draper, MIT, and Cambridge School Volunteers.

The E-mail KeyPal Program is an e-mail pen pal program in which fifth graders from the Kennedy-Longfellow Elementary School will be paired with adult employees from Draper Laboratory, IBM and MIT. The program provides adult role models, fosters the improvement of writing and computer skills, and increases career awareness through one-on-one virtual mentoring and face-to-face visits in the workplace and at the school. The program is coordinated by Cambridge School Volunteers (CSV) and Kennedy-Longfellow School staff members.

Guided by rubrics provided by classroom teachers, KeyPals will act as a responsive audience for a variety of writing, math, social studies and science assignments, thereby helping students to focus on task completion, content, and the mechanics of writing.

While the KeyPal relationship will always be focused on a specific program as designated by the teacher in advance, KeyPals will also find that a friendly, mentor relationship will develop through their correspondence.

This year’s students traveled to each site, in December, to meet their mentor, learn about that person’s career. During the visit, students and adults had an opportunity to collaborate on an bio poem assignment.

Students will continue to share their written work and collaborate with KeyPals throughout the school year and will have additional face-to-face meetings.

The Kennedy-Longfellow will host grade 5 families for a breakfast here on Wednesday, February 7th. Stay tuned for details!
