By Mrs. Malone
For the fifth year our JK-5 students participated in the KLO Hour of Code during the month of December. This was in conjunction with the Computer Science in Education Celebration that takes place every December.
Students had the opportunity to watch videos to learn more about what the Hour of Code celebration is. Students then made connections to how many of their peers currently code by giving examples of how they use code in their lives.
This has become an annual event that students look forward to participating in.
In addition, the following books were available in the Makerspace. Students were encouraged to take some time to look over these books in the hopes that they might inspire students to be more interested in learning to code. They are great resources that shine light on coding.
Mrs. Malone’s HOUR OF CODE books:
Students were able to participate in several Hour of Code activities. Activities took place in the Makerspace and Library and were planned by Susan Moynihan and Kathy Malone.
Students began with offline activities like programing a teacher, a classmate, or a jelly sandwich..
Then students moved into interactive programing experiences with Bee Bots-worked in teams to program Bee Bot around the mat, KiBos-worked in teams to develop lines of code-scan them-then test the code out , Scratch Jr. and PBS Scratch Jr.-programmed Sprites to move around the screen-i.e. Jump and walk, Scratch-programmed minigames, Madew/Code-programmed emojis--music, and some had a chance to use the Hour of Code site that includes many programing challenges. Two particular favorites this year were programing in
Minecraft and
Dance Party.
