Dear Kennedy-Longfellow Parents and Guardians:

It’s that time of year again - Back to School! We are in full preparation mode getting ready to welcome all of our new and returning JK-5 students and can’t wait to see everyone!

We are excited to welcome our new Acting Assistant Principal, Ms. Phanenca Babio to the KLO. Ms. Babio has worked in the Cambridge Public Schools for several years as an Inclusion Specialist and an Acting AP for CSUS. Prior to her work here in Cambridge, Ms. Babio worked in the Boston Public Schools. Also, our School Clerk, Ms. Iris Contreras is out on maternity leave until November. In her absence, we are thrilled to have Ms. Tabitha Howard filling in to be our Acting School Clerk.

Here at the KLO, we value and celebrate the rich diversity of our students, families and staff. Our vision for the Kennedy-Longfellow School is to challenge ALL students to become curious, active and engaged learners through culturally relevant curriculum and authentic classroom and field experiences that promote awareness of each individual’s role in a global community. We aim to achieve this vision by creating a supportive and nurturing school environment for the students and by partnering with families and community partners.

We embrace the whole child and our staff works diligently toward ensuring we meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of everyone in the building. We pride ourselves on teaching and living our school values of being an Active Learner, being Kind, and being a Responsible Citizen every day. We call these values The Wildcat Way!

This year, the first day of school for all of our students in grades 1-5 is Tuesday, September 3th. The first day of school for all of our JK and K students is Thursday, September 5th.

During the first few weeks of school there will be several opportunities for you to learn about or get reacquainted with our school community.

  • There is a playdate on our playground on August 29th from 2 - 4PM. Come and meet other families and Ms. Wyse (our Family Liaison) and Ms. Gerber (our principal).

  • Individual contact (either email, phone call, or postcard) from your child’s classroom teacher.

  • Our SEI (Sheltered English Immersion) Open House is scheduled for Tuesday, August 27th from 2:30 - 4PM.

  • Back to School Night (for all grades and classes) - Thursday, September 19 from 5:30 - 7:30PM.

  • If you have specific questions prior to the start of school (and after), please always feel free to email me, Ms. Wyse, or Phanenca Babio, our Acting Assistant Principal.

  • There is a call for room parents if you are interested please contact Nancy Wyse.

  • You can always check out the KLO website and click on a short FAQ for families to help you have a great year and to help you navigate some of the basics.

Teacher Assignments

  • For all returning KLO families in grades 1-5, the teacher your child was assigned in June for the Step up Day remains the same. If you have forgotten, please feel free to email Tabitha Howard, or call the school at 617.349.6842. You can also email me or Phanenca Babio.

  • For all students who are new to the KLO in grades 1-5, we will be calling you directly with your child and/or children’s homeroom assignment(s).

  • For all of our JK and K students (new and returning), the teachers will be contacting you directly to introduce themselves and to set up a time for Kindergarten Orientation meetings.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing all of our familiar faces along with those who are new to our school in early September.

Best Regards,

Christine Gerber
