Dear Kennedy-Longfellow Parents and Guardians:

It’s hard to believe that it is already back-to-school time! The summers seem to go by so quickly these days. Even though the time goes by so fast, I hope you enjoyed all the wonderful things that summer brings – sunshine, barbecues, beaches, ice-cream, pools, and much, much more. We are in full preparation mode getting ready to welcome all of our new and returning JK-5 students and can’t wait to see everyone!

Here at the KLO, we value and celebrate the rich diversity of our students, families and staff. Our vision for the Kennedy-Longfellow School is to challenge ALL students to become curious, active and engaged learners through culturally relevant curriculum and authentic classroom and field experiences that promote awareness of each individual’s role in a global community. We aim to achieve this vision by creating a supportive and nurturing school environment for the students and by partnering with families and community partners.

We embrace the whole child and our staff works diligently toward ensuring we meet the academic, social, and emotional needs of everyone in the building. We pride ourselves on teaching and living our school values of Active Learning, Citizenship, Respect, Responsibility, and Safety every day. We call these five values The Wildcat Way!

This year, the first day of school for all of our students in grades 1-5 is Tuesday, September 4th. The first day of school for all of our JK and K students is Thursday, September 6th.

During the first few weeks of school there will be several opportunities for you to learn about or get reacquainted with our school community.

  • There is a playdate on our playground on August 29th from 4:30 - 6PM. Come and meet other families and Ms. Wyse (our Family Liaison) and Ms. Gerber (our principal)
  • Individual contact (either email, phone call, or postcard) from your child’s classroom teacher.
  • Back to School Night - Thursday, September 13 from 5:30 - 7:30PM.
  • If you have specific questions prior to the start of school (and after), please always feel free to email me, Ms. Wyse, or Erin Kuehn, our Assistant Principal.
  • Here is a short FAQ for families to help you have a great year and to help you navigate some of the basics. There is also a call for room parents if you are interested please take a look at that and contact Nancy Wyse.
  • You can always check out the KLO website too.

Teacher Assignments:

  • For all returning KLO families in grades 1-5, the teacher your child was assigned in June for the Step up Day remains the same. If you have forgotten, please feel free to email Iris Contreras or call the school at 617.349.6842. You can also email me or Erin Kuehn.
  • For all students who are new to the KLO in grades 1-5, we will be calling you to inform you of your child’s teacher and room number this week and next.
  • For all of our JK and K students (new and returning), the teachers will be contacting you directly to introduce themselves and to set up a time for Kindergarten Orientation meetings.

We hope you enjoy the rest of your summer and we look forward to seeing all of our familiar faces along with those who are new to our school in early September.

Best Regards,

Christine Gerber
