Kindergarten Math

KMath.jpgThe 2011 Massachusetts Curriculum Framework for Mathematics provides the primary foundation for mathematics instruction in grades at the Kennedy-Longfellow School. This framework builds on the Common Core State Standards for Mathematics and clearly defines and communicates what is expected of students at each grade level in terms of their mathematical understandings.

Investigations in Number, Data, and Space is the primary resource that is used for mathematics instruction. These materials are closely aligned to the new mathematical content. In addition to Investigations, teachers use additional instructional materials to ensure that students have many opportunities to achieve expected mathematics understanding.

In Kindergarten, instructional time should focus on two critical areas

  • Representing, relating, and operating on whole numbers, initially with sets of objects
  • Describing shapes and space

The Standards for Mathematical Practice describe varieties of expertise that all students of mathematics should develop from grades JK through 12. For more specific information on learning expectations for students at the kindergarten grade level, visit the CPS Math Dept. website.
